3 Simple Ways to Support Small Businesses for Free

When it comes to supporting small businesses there can be many reasons why one isn’t able to do so financially. However, don’t let that stop you from showing your support. Small businesses routinely help stimulate local economies, provide local jobs, help support local initiatives, and depending on the place can reduce plastic waste and excess waste more readily than large businesses.

Whatever your reasons may be for loving small businesses, here are a few ways to support them for free.

1.Follow on Social Media

Small businesses are just that, small. That means the more people who are able to learn about them the better. Social media platforms can be a great way for small businesses to get their messaging out to those who are interested. When you follow a small business on social media it adds to their reach, keeps you in the loop, and can help push their content to your network as well.

If you want to go above and beyond, consider posting about the small business on your social media accounts. Whether it's simply sharing the small business’s profile or getting more creative by taking a photo of the shop from your last visit or their products you like, all are welcomed. This type of engagement helps small businesses get seen and shows the social media platform algorithm people like their shop.

2. Leave Five Star Reviews

Most businesses have the ability for you to leave your feedback and reviews. Our Etsy Shop for example lets those who have purchased an item from us leave a review. In the case of Etsy anything below a five star review negatively impacts us on the Etsy Platform, that’s how Etsy operates. While a less than five star review might not seem like a big deal it can be detrimental to small businesses that don’t receive lots of reviews as it plunges their average.

If you have kind things to say consider leaving a five star review on your favorite small businesses shops and pages. If you have not so kind things to say be sure to reach out directly to the small business first. Unlike big shops, small businesses are more likely to respond personally and try to fix whatever issues may have come up.

3. Tell A Friend Who Might Not Know About the Shop

Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful methods of advertising for small businesses. By telling your friends and family about your favorite small businesses your network is more likely to visit and shop those businesses. This can be done in everyday conversation or giving your friends a round-up of all the small businesses you have been enjoying.

However you wish to support small businesses is appreciated. Small business life is hard and hearing and seeing when people care and are appreciative of your business can mean a lot. Be sure to let us know what small businesses you love in the comments below!
