Lip balm may seem like a mundane purchase, but the vast majority of lip balms you buy are packaged in plastic that will take hundreds of years to break down (1). Every lip balm you have ever used is still around and will be for some time.

When it comes to your sustainability journey one small step you can take is switching to using a lip balm that is packaged in zero waste materials. This means no longer purchasing lip balms in plastic tubing when possible.

To make the switch easier we have found a handful of companies that make zero waste lip balms and tested three out for you. Below we will dive into which 3 lip balm companies we tested from, which lip balms had the best nontoxic ingredients, the best experience, and we’ll recommend where to purchase.

We tested lip balms from:

  • Attitude

  • Long Wknd

  • Poppy & Pout

Overall comparison for each brand’s lip balms:

Attitude Zero Waste Lip Balms
  • Company Background: Founded in 2006 with the goals of creating products that were better for people's health and the environment, Attitude uses clean naturally sourced ingredients, is EWG Verified, and makes Vegan Cruelty free products. Attitude is based out of Canada.

  • Lip Balm: We tested their Coconut Lip Balm

  • Ingredients: Sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, shea butter, sunflower seed wax, behenyl behenate, castor seed oil, coco caprylate/caprate, polyhydroxystearic acid, soybean oil, candelilla wax, caprylic/capric triglyceride, rosemary leaf extract, gamma-octalactone, gamma-nonalactone, vanillin, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl acetate

  • Experience: Such a great lip balm. Glides on smoothly with a light scent.

  • Where to Buy: Visit Attitude Online to purchase their lip balms and hundreds of other sustainable products or on Amazon

Long Wknd

LONG WKND Zero Waste Lip Balms
  • Company Background: Made in Austin Texas, this natural skincare company is cruelty free (and Leaping Bunny certified), vegan, made in small batches, and packaged in zero plastic materials.

  • Lip Balm: We tested their Cocoa Vanilla Lip Balm.

  • Ingredients: Cocoa Seed Butter, Candelilla Wax, Grape Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Vanilla Essential Oil

  • Experience: When applying this lip balm there is a slightly more granular feel vs. smooth texture but still overall a great lip balm, simply a matter of personal preference. The packaging for this lip balm doesn’t have a waxy coating on it like the others we tried which seems like a better option to pick if instead of recycling you will compost the packaging (as it may break down easier).

  • Where to Buy: You can visit Long Wknd directly to shop lip balms.

Poppy & Pout

  • Company Background: Poppy & Pout has been hand making all their lip care products in downtown Idaho Falls, Idaho since 2014. Their products are cruelty free and made with 100% natural ingredients.

  • Lip Balm: We tested their Island Coconut Lip Balm.

  • Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Sunflower Oil, Natural Coconut Flavor Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Extract, Vitamin E

  • Experience: This lip balm glides on smoothly and has a slightly stronger scent than Attitude’s lip balm. Everyone has a different scent preference so if you like stronger smelling items Poppy and Pout could be a good company to look into.

  • Where to Buy: Shop Poppy & Pout online or on Amazon

It’s important to remember that when looking for a zero waste lip balm try your best to find one that is made closer to you, for example we are in the USA so a USA made lip balm theoretically has to travel less far to me than if I purchased it from a different country or continent.

Also be sure to look at the ingredient list. The fewer the ingredients tend to be better and be cautious of lip balms (or any product) that lists “fragrance” or something similar instead of the specific ingredients used like essential oils and extracts. To learn more about potentially harmful ingredients placed in everyday products read our blog post on the topic.

Be sure to let us know if you end up trying a zero waste lip balm! We’d love to know which one you went with and how it turned out.
